The PADI Open Water Diver course is your passport to the underwater world. Across knowledge sessions, confined-water skills and ocean dives at Julian Rocks, you'll learn the essentials of safe, confident scuba diving.

We keep groups small, teach with patience, and tailor the pace so you're comfortable at every step. Graduate ready to explore — here in Byron Bay and anywhere in the world.

Course details

Cost

$985, including all equipment hire, materials, training and certification fees.

Duration

3 days (weather dependent) combining knowledge development, confined-water skills and 4 ocean dives at Julian Rocks.

Structure

As soon as you book we'll sign you up for PADI Open Water eLearning — complete the theory (approx. 6–8 hours) at your own pace before joining us at Sundive. On your course days you'll cover:

Knowledge review — confirm understanding and ask questions.
Swim test — 200 m unassisted to confirm water confidence.
Pool session (confined water, 6–8 hours) — learn and demonstrate all fundamental skills.
4 ocean dives at Julian Rocks — apply skills in the open water; turtles, rays and reef sharks are regular company.

Prerequisites

Minimum age 12 years.
Able to swim 200 m unassisted.
Pre-existing medical conditions may require physician clearance — see the PADI Medical Form (PDF).
