Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the Booking Process

How do I make a booking and how do I find the latest availability, timings of dives and prices?
All bookings are made through the website and we do not accept bookings over the phone. Our website shows dynamic live availability, timings and prices. All bookings are confirmed with either a 25% deposit (courses are paid in full) or full payment if booking within 24 hours of departure.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

How are payments handled?
We use Square for card payments. If only a deposit is paid, the remaining balance is auto-charged the day before your trip. Square’s card fee is 2.2%.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

What’s your cancellation policy?
When you book an experience, dive or multiple dives with Sundive you are booking a limited space on your scheduled boat. Once you book, you have blocked the space, and it is saved for you. The day before your trip, we organise the appropriate amount of staff and resources for your diving day. As such, if you decide not to partake in any trip or dive on the day, for whatever reason, we will be unable to refund or reschedule it. We have a fair 24-hour cancellation policy for bookings under six people.

Please note that if you wish to cancel or change a booking, this must be done so in writing via email. We can’t make changes or cancellations to bookings over the phone.

For bookings over six people there is a 72-hour cancellation policy and for groups of 12 or more there is a seven day cancellation policy. If you need to change your booking for any reason. For these reasons, we cannot refund, credit or reschedule cancellations for last-minute illnesses. Refunds can only be issued onto credit cards as bank transfer is not possible. Please note that emails are not monitored 24 hours a day and notification of cancellations need to be sent within normal and reasonable working hours.

Please note for all dive courses (not Try Scuba, Refresher or Reactivate) that seven days' notice is required to cancel or change your course.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

How do refunds work?
Refunds are issued through our online card service provider ‘Square’ and although processed instantly on our side, they can take between 2 and 7 working days for refunds to appear on statements depending on the bank and card type. If a reservation is cancelled by the booker then the incurred card fee will not be refunded. If the activity is cancelled by Sundive then a full refund including the card fee will be issued.

Thank you for your understanding.

Do you accept gift vouchers? How do I use one?
Yes. Gift vouchers are non-refundable, valid for 3 years, and can be used for any Sundive activity or in-store purchase (even if the voucher text mentions a specific activity). At checkout, choose “Pay by Gift Voucher” and enter your GV code. Please review our policies and prerequisites before purchasing.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

I am having difficulty booking as the system won’t accept my credit card, what should I do?
Most of the time, when people are having trouble booking it is either a problem with their credit card or it is the security on their device or browser. Firstly, try switching device and browser and if that doesn’t work, try a compatible credit or debit card. Square works with any Australian-issued and most internationally-issued magstripe and chip cards bearing a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, or eftpos logo.

We don't reserve spaces and we require a credit card deposit to secure a booking. We aren’t able to accept bookings over the phone, but you are welcome to come into the shop to book directly as an alternative.

Medical Conditions, Medical Clearance Requirements & Waivers and Forms

Sundive's trips take place offshore at Nguthungulli Julian Rocks where there are no immediate medical facilities and the use of strenuous exercise may be required. Scuba diving, snorkelling and freediving can be strenuous physical activities, even in calm water, and may increase the health and safety risks for persons suffering from any medical condition (medicated or not) that may be made worse by physical exertion, such as, but not limited to, neurological disorders/conditions/diseases (e.g. Parkinson's Disease), heart conditions/disease, blood diseases/conditions (such as any previous history of blood clots or any form of anaemia), lung diseases/conditions and/or a previous history of pneumothorax or Immersion Pulmonary Oedema, liver diseases/conditions or a previous history of drug use or Alcohol Use Disorder, kidney diseases/conditions, asthma, diabetic conditions, any previous history of decompression sickness or loss of consciousness, panic, claustrophobia or any medical condition that can result in loss of consciousness such as, but not limited to, allergies, high blood pressure, hypoglycemia, asthma, or someone taking medicines such as blood thinners or anticoagulants.

Sundive's trips are unsuitable for anyone suffering from or with a history of any of the above conditions or medications, unless a full recreational SPUMS (South Pacific Underwater Medical Society) dive medical or accredited international equivalent (click on button below), with no caveats or special requirements, is provided, signed by a registered diving medical doctor. Please note that any other diver medical will not be accepted. For a list of qualifying doctors please click on the SPUMS button below. In Byron Bay a diving medical can be acquired from Dr Joel Hissink at Bay Medical Centre, click on the Bay Medical Centre button below for contact details.

For all other conditions, a clear (with no caveats or special requirements) recreational SPUMS dive medical, in addition to the ability to complete the Sundive waiver, will be required if any person within a booking has any medical condition contraindicated to scuba diving.

Due to the remoteness of the site, Sundive's trips are unsuitable for anyone with a history of epilepsy, seizures, blackouts or loss of consciousness, even with a dive medical or medical clearance. Sundive's trips are also unsuitable, even with a dive medical or medical clearance, for anyone with any medical condition that requires a medical device such as a pacemaker, insulin-dependent diabetics, requirements of medication (e.g. glucose), allergy sufferers that require an epi-pen, asthma sufferers who require an inhaler, or anyone that has any medical condition that requires a similar medical device.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

Age and related medical clearance requirements

AGE REQUIREMENTS — Both certified SCUBA divers and snorkellers 65 years of age (anyone whose 65th birthday has already passed) and over require a doctor's clearance letter done within the last 12 months incorporating clearance for SCUBA diving or snorkelling but also including strenuous activity. This must be sent to Sundive before the day of your trip. If you are over 70 years of age you will need a full SPUMS medical or international equivalent for SCUBA diving only.

If you are over 55 years of age and starting your PADI Open Water course you will also need to acquire a valid dive medical before starting the course. For certified SCUBA divers under the age of 18 years old, a SCUBA-certified parent or guardian must be present and stay with them at all times throughout the dive. In Australia, the minimum age for the Open Water Course is 12 years old; an adult or guardian is not required to be present but must give permission. Although certifications abroad may be retained younger, for compliance the minimum age to dive in a certified group at Sundive is 12 years old with a Junior Open Water certification. For anyone with a child of 11 years of age or younger, a private instructor must be booked for the diving group in addition to a parent or guardian being present on the dive.

For snorkellers, the minimum age is 7 years old. The minimum age to take part in a Try Scuba experience is 12 years old, and parental permission is required.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

Fitness level & launch safety
We launch through surf; boarding can be time-sensitive and the ride can be bumpy. Guests must be able-bodied, react quickly, board during launch, and climb the ladder post-dive. Trips are unsuitable for back problems/injuries aggravated by motion. All participants must be able to swim 200 m unassisted.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

Swimming ability & snorkel requirements
Nguthungulli Julian Rocks is located on the Eastern most tip of Australia and, as such, is exposed to open ocean with strong current, strong waves and large swells. This can make surface conditions choppy. Sea sickness medication is highly recommended as even on what appear to be flat days, the unseen residual swell can still be significant. If you do suffer from sea sickness it is recommended to stick to one trip per day as refunds or cancellations can't be made at the last minute for sickness.

Snorkelling and Try Scuba participants must be strong swimmers capable of swimming 200 m unassisted, and snorkellers must have previous experience in snorkelling. We do not offer any form of snorkel training. THIS TRIP IS UNSUITABLE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T SNORKELLED BEFORE.

Please note that if you tick yes to having snorkelled before and then, on the day, announce you have never snorkelled before we will be unable to refund, credit or reschedule your trip.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

Diving ability & language
Conditions may include swell, current, surge, and cool water. Divers must have the fitness, confidence and competence to dive such conditions and follow a guided group. If unsure, please book a private guide. Minimum certification is Open Water Diver (PADI Scuba Diver and similar must book a private guide). Briefings are in English; understanding and communication in English are required for safety.

If you haven’t dived in 2 years, a Refresher is required; in 4+ years, a PADI ReActivate is required.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

Questions about PADI

I am having problems with my PADI e-learning for my PADI course or I can't find my PADI certification, what should I do?

PADI is a separate business to Sundive, and they have their own support network for all PADI products. The quickest way to get help and support from PADI is to call them directly on +61 (0) 2 9454 2888 and they will offer assistance directly, including to locate diving certifications.

Questions for Arrival

What time should I arrive?
Your booked time (7:15, 10:15, or 13:15) is the check-in time. Please don’t arrive earlier — your guide will be ready at that time. Meet at the Sundive shop on Middleton Street.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

What proof of certification do I need and do I require my log book?
Certified divers must show visual proof (physical or digital card) with photo, name, certification level, and certifying body. Logbooks aren’t proof of diving certification and are not required to dive. A logbook is a personal diary and it is the choice of the diver to record their dives in a log book.

If you need us to look up your certification, please email us at least 24 hours before diving. If proof can’t be shown/found on the day, we can’t take you diving and no refund/changes can be given.

Questions about Diving and Snorkelling

Are certified dives with Sundive guided?
Yes. All dives with Sundive are guided with a maximum group size of six divers. As a certified diver joining a certified diving group, you are expected to have the competence, confidence and ability to dive in a group environment.

Our guides are not diving instructors; they are there to navigate the dive site, manage the group, and show you the highlights of Nguthungulli Julian Rocks. They are not there to instruct, train or teach skills.

If you feel that you don’t yet have the confidence, competence or ability to dive comfortably in a group, we strongly recommend booking a private guide who can look after you in a more personalised way and help you build confidence.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

What dive sites will I visit and if I do a double dive will I visit the same site?
We exclusively visit the Nguthungulli Julian Rocks dive site. Please note that the specific entry and exit points for any dive are determined only once we arrive at the location. This decision is made by the skipper and depends entirely on environmental factors, including current, swell, and wind direction.

While we make every effort to vary the location or direction of the dives for our double divers or multiple-day divers, this is not always feasible and is subject to the day's diving conditions. Therefore, we are unable to predict or guarantee the exact entry and exit locations for any dive in advance.

If you want to visit a particular location, then we recommend booking a private guide, which will give you a better chance of meeting your goals.

Can a certified diver join a Try Scuba participant?
Certified diving and Try Scuba are two different activities that take place in different dive groups. The Try Scuba is a smaller group activity with a maximum number of 4 participants with a 12 m depth limit. Try Scuba participants need to complete a pool session prior to the ocean dive. You have two options:

If you are committed to diving together with the Try Scuba participant, the certified diver needs to also book on the Try Scuba program. By doing so, the certified diver will be subject to the limitations of the introductory group such as the 12 m max limit. The certified diver does not need to join the pool session but will still need to pay the full rate of the Try Scuba activity.

If the certified diver is happy to go out at the same time but join a group of certified divers for a regular dive, please book onto our 10:00 AM dive trip. This is the trip when the Try Scuba activity will also be running. We will endeavour to put you on the same vessel; however, this is not guaranteed as it depends on the groups that are booked and sea conditions, but you will certainly go out and return at the same time.

Are trips weather dependent and additional information about weather, diving conditions and visibility at Nguthungulli Julian Rocks.
Yes — especially snorkelling. Trips to Nguthungulli / Julian Rocks are weather and sea-condition dependent. Swell, wind, currents and tides can all affect whether a trip can safely operate.

Visibility at Julian Rocks is impossible to predict precisely and can vary day-to-day and even between dives on the same day. Our average visibility is around 8 m, with a typical range of 5–20 m, but this is only a guide.

If we cancel due to conditions, it’s for safety; you can reschedule or receive a full refund. We appreciate kindness toward our team; rudeness/aggression is not tolerated.

What can I see throughout the year at Nguthungulli Julian Rocks?

Did you know Julian Rocks Marine Reserve, where our dive sites are located, has been likened to a ‘mini Galapagos’ (Lonely Planet 2014) and one of the best dive spots in Australia (The Australian 2011)?

The Lonely Planet also rated Byron Bay in the top ten places in the world to learn to dive. With our dive sites just 2.5 km offshore, you won’t spend hours on a boat every time you go diving, although in the 5 minutes it takes to get there, you can see dolphins playing in the bay or whales as they migrate past in winter.

Underwater, the summer months bring in manta rays and leopard sharks, whilst the cooler winter waters attract the endangered grey nurse sharks. In addition, turtles, rays, crustaceans, nudibranchs, octopus, eels and a plethora of fish populate our dive sites, thanks to our marine park status and strict local laws restricting the number of boat launches.

Then there’s Byron Bay itself; with its laid back attitude, stunning scenery, endless beaches, epic surf breaks, thriving nightlife and stunning hinterland nature reserves, this town has it all. It’s no wonder that this iconic coastline is one of Australia’s most popular holiday destinations. Great food and a flourishing arts, culture and live music scene means there is always somewhere to go or something to do when you’re not diving.

What happens with buddy procedures when I book as a single diver or in a group with an odd number?
When you book a dive as a single diver or in a group as an odd number, we will assign you or the odd person a buddy within your allocated dive group. The diver and the assigned buddy will be responsible for each other under the buddy system. Please note that your buddy assignment depends on the other divers booked on the day and is outside of Sundive's control. While we always strive to pair you with the most appropriate person in your group, sometimes your buddy may have a different level of experience, skill, or air consumption than you, and this may affect the length of the dive. This is not something we can predict or control in advance. By booking as a single diver, you acknowledge and accept these terms. If you have any concerns or wish to avoid this possibility, we recommend booking a dedicated private guide. If you are aware that you consume a lot of air, consider hiring a 15L dive cylinder so as not to affect your buddy's dive. Both private guide and 15L cylinders can be added on in the booking process.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.

Do Sundive allow technical diving equipment or support technical dives or divers?
Sundive does not support any form of technical diving that varies from standard recreational diving and equipment. We do not allow technical configurations on our boats, including (but not limited to) sidemount systems and rebreathers.

All bookings are made online via the website which has live availability, timings and prices.
