Information on Dive Medicals
Is a Dive Medical Required ?
PADI courses globally are certified as compliant with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards for Recreational Diving Services. It is an accepted international standard that if you have no medical conditions and you can tick NO to all the medical conditions on the standard PADI forms that you do not require a dive medical. In Australia however a body called "Standards Australia" introduced a set of local guidelines for Open Water SCUBA courses and they recommend ALL Open Water Students to obtain a Dive Medical. This has been a locally accepted 18 year old standard. In NSW this is not a law but a recommended local standard. Another body, the South Pacific Under Water Medicine Society (SPUMS), also recommends a dive medical for all Open Water Students.
Our position at Sundive is that if you can tick NO to all the questions on the PADI Medical Form then you are potentially exempt from a medical as per PADI standards. At Sundive and at many other dive shops in NSW we are allowing students the option of choosing to follow the accepted international standards and not to proceed with a dive medical (if they are fit and pass the check-list). The only exceptions would be if you are under 15 years old or older the 45 years old. In this case you will be required to have a dive medical.
