Sundive Byron Bay Photo Shoot-Out 2010

Keeping the biggest Australian Photo Shoot-Out alive...

Sundive Byron Bay is proud to announce its first in-house Photo competition which will be the fourth major Photo Shoot-Out held in Byron Bay. Due to the great enjoyment and success of our customers in Byron Bay's previous photo competitions, Sundive stepped in and chose to continue this annual event after it was announced that the competition will be moved to Christmas Island.

The Byron Bay Photo Shoot-out 2010 promises to be bigger and better than ever. We have raised over $15,000 worth of fantastic prizes thanks to our very generous sponsors. During the week, there will be BBQ's, a treasure hunt, prize raffles and an exciting Grand Finale on Sunday afternoon when the winners will be announced.

In addition to the fantastic prizes on offer we will be offering EVERY competitor a $300 Gift Voucher from SCUBAPIX. You will win by just entering this competition. Read on below for more information.

Screening of "The End of the Line" Thursday 27 May 2010

On Thursday 27 May 2010, we will be hosting the screening of a a new documentary called “The End of the Line” at the Byron Bay Community Center. This is the first major documentary about the devastating effect of overfishing. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and has not been shown in Australia since. For more information click here to visit the filmmakers website.  

All proceeds of this screening will go to the Australian Seabird Rescue, a NSW coastal wildlife conservation and protection organization involved in the rescue of seabirds, sea turtles and marine mammals. Before the screening, local videographer and well known film-maker David Warth and will give a brief talk on the subject of underwater documentaries and together with our very own documentary celebrity Lin Sutherland, they will fill us in on their recent projects.

Sundive Shoot-Out Competition Rules

By entering the competition, the participant agrees to the following rules:

GENERAL RULES:

• All entered photos and videos must be taken on dives with Sundive Byron Bay between 22 May 2010 and 29 May 2010 and must have been taken by the competitor in whose name they are entered.

• The competition is for amateur photographers only. Sundive staff cannot participate in this competition.

• First and second prizes will be awarded in the following categories: DSLR cameras (Best DSLR Photo, Best Macro, Best Wide-Angle, Best Portfolio) and Point & Shoot cameras (Best Photo, Best Portfolio) and Best Video.

• All entries must be submitted by 5pm on Saturday 29 May 2010 with Christina or Jack at Sundive, Shop 8, 9-11 Middleton Street, Byron Bay.

• An experienced jury nominated by Sundive will select the winners who will be announced during the Shoot-out Finale on Sunday 30 May 2010 from 2pm when all available prizes will be distributed.

• Sundive reserves the right to change prizes and entry categories.

• By entering the competition, the participant authorizes Sundive to use all winning materials on the Sundive website, local media and all other media and publications relating to the Sundive Photo Competition 2010.

• All participants must adhere to the NSW Marine Parks Authority Code of Conduct at all times. Any evidence to the contrary will result in immediate disqualification.

• Participants must not touch or manipulate any marine life. Any evidence that a participant has done so will result in immediate disqualification.

• Participants must not damage or harm marine life in any way. This includes but is not limited to the damaging of sponges, corals or anything living on the bottom substrate. Divers must maintain good buoyancy control at all times. It is not acceptable to touch the bottom and cause damage whilst photographing. Any evidence that a participant has done so will result in immediate disqualification.

• All participants must agree to abide by PADI Safe Diving Regulations.

• All participants must dive with a dive buddy at all times.

• Dives are limited to a maximum bottom time of 50mins, if diving with a dive computer. Bottom times will be shorter if participants are diving on the PADI RDP tables. All dives are no-decompression dives. However, safety stops are recommended at 5 metres for 3 minutes.

PHOTOGRAPHY CATEGORY:

• All participants can enter photographs for all applicable categories except Best DSLR Photo which will be chosen from all photographs entered in the DSLR categories Macro and Wide-Angle. Participants can enter a maximum of five photos per category plus six photos in the portfolio category.

• Photoshop manipulation is allowed, but limited to:

  1. Tonal corrections and colour corrections (no dodging/burning allowed):
  2. Moderate sharpening and saturation (but blurring of backgrounds is not allowed);
  3. Removing backscatter or noise from digital images;
  4. Cropping, but only 10% of the original image. (Contestants will be bound by the honour system.) Submissions which have obviously been heavily cropped will be disqualified.
  5. Please keep in mind that this is a photo competition, not an editing competition. Judges will award prizes accordingly.

• Optimized photographs have to be submitted together with the original files with all image data intact.

• All entries have to be marked with the photographer’s first and last name, category, number of entry and distinction between original and optimized files (john-smith-macro-1-ori.jpg).

• Only digital photographs can be entered. Submissions must be on DVD, CD or USB memory stick and must be high resolution JPEG’s. Participants must label their submissions clearly with their name and contact phone number and include a written or printed list of photographs entered and entry category chosen.

• All photographs entered in the portfolio category must be submitted in a folder on the submitted media. The folder must be named “Portfolio” and can only contain a maximum of six photographs.

VIDEOGRAPHY CATEGORY:

• Every participant can enter only one video with a maximum length of 3 minutes.

• All entered videos must be on DVD, playable by a standard DVD player and should be in mpeg-2 format.

• The entered video must be submitted together with all original uncut footage on their original format showing that it has been filmed on the dates of the shoot-out.

• Participants must label their submissions clearly with their name, contact phone number and the title of their video.

• All audio must be original or permission must be presented from the copyright holder. Any violations will result in disqualification.
